Ailing Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga who is presently receiving medical treatment in China was reportedly barred from attending the late former president Robert Mugabe’s funeral by his medical team and family members citing that he had not fully recovered.

Zimbabwe Independent reports that the ailing vice-president who has been anxiously wanting to attend the former leader’s funeral will miss the burial as he is still receiving treatment although having recovered.

The retired general who was one of the chief architects of the military coup which ended Mugabe’s 37-year rule in 2017 and led to the ascendence of Emmerson Mnangagwa to presidency, was airlifted to South Africa on the 23rd of June where he was reported to be in critical condition.

Chiwenga was then transferred to China from South Africa in July where he was to be administered with an antidote for poisoning by Chinese medical experts following reports that he was suffering from multiple organ failure amid poisoning fears.

The publication reports that underwent a successful second life-saving operation at a top Beijing hospital this month, government, family and close associates confirmed.

Mugabe will be buried in his rural Zvimba home this weekend after his family stuck to its guns to honour his last wish in defiance of sustained pressure from President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government, which wanted him interred at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.

The government, which yesterday initially threatened to deny the family a burial order, finally relented to pressure, paving way for the burial to take place in Zvimba, as first reported by the Zimbabwe Independent in August.iHARARE
