Former President Robert Mugabe’s family have been relentless in honouring the late former leader’s last wishes following excessive pressure from his successor Emmerson Mnangagwa to hijack the funeral proceedings.

Robert Mugabe who died last week on Friday in Singapore, reportedly instructed his family before he’s death that he should be buried at rural Zvimba homestead in Mashonaland West province.

The Zimbabwe Independent reports that Mugabe also instructed his family not to allow his allies to take custody of his body fearing that it might be used for ritualistic purposes to consolidate and maintain power. Mugabe reportedly insisted that Grace and other family members guard his body until he was buried.

As a result Grace and the family have been clinging onto Mugabe’s body since its arrival on Wednesday.

The body was closely guarded yesterday and Mugabe’s youngest son Bellarmine Chatunga was apprehensive that his mother and sister travel alone in a military helicopter carrying the body from the Blue roof mansion to Rufaro Stadium in Harare after security officers tried to stop him.

He then bulldozed his way and security officers backed down.

The family reportedly has also put security arrangements to guard the body. When the coffin arrived in Harare on Wednesday, it is clear from the reception ceremony, body language of the Mugabe family members and close monitoring of the casket that the bereaved had no intention of giving Mnangagwa control.

The body was later taken to One Commando Barracks for the military parade and then straight to the Blue roof mansion. iharare
