President Emmerson Mnangagwa wants to be succeeded by a fairly young leader compared to those that have ruled the country before , a senior government official has said.

Nick Mangwana the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services said, “President Mnangagwa believes that the next President and leadership of Zimbabwe should be a younger in age compared to the leadership the country has had so far.”

Mangwana said Mnangagwa has started grooming younger leaders to take over the reins of leadership.

“It is with this in mind that he has taken the bold step of infusing young leadership in government as deputies to learn the ropes.”

Mangwana’s statements gave rose to speculation that Mnangagwa is planning to dump his ailing Vice President Constantino Chiwenga who has widely viewed as the successor.

Commenting on the matter South African based analyst Kelvin Mazhandu said Mangwana’s statements showed the deep seated fight within the ruling ZANU PF.

“The statement by the Permanent Secretary who is also a senior civil servant betrays the deep the succession fight within ZANU PF.” Said Mazhandu. “If you see such statements being uttered in public, it shows that the Mnangagwa faction of ZANU PF is moving in for a kill and does not want Chiwenga to takeover.

“It also means that there is lack of democracy in the party because a President who is supposed to serve a minimum of five years and maximum of ten years must not be in the business of grooming successors but a successor must be identified and chosen by the people and not be groomed by an individual.”

Mazhandu added that Mnangagwa must not feel entitled to Zimbabwe because it is a democracy and not a monarchy.
